Saints Extend Winning Streak to Four Games With 7-4 Victory

JOLIET, Ill. --- Back-to-back run-scoring doubles from third baseman Josh Tesch (GR/Lockport, Ill.) and designated hitter Joe McGuire (SR/Lockport, Ill.) in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 4-4 tie and enabled the University of St. Francis baseball team to register its fourth win in a row with its 7-4 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Lincoln College on Wednesday afternoon at DuPage Medical Group Field.

After totaling 37 runs in a doubleheader with the Lynx one day earlier, the Saints looked to continue that scoring bonanza on Wednesday by building a 3-0 lead after two innings.  A run-scoring groundout by catcher Jake LaSota (JR/Marengo, Ill.), a wild pitch and a solo home run from right fielder Travis Schoonover (GR/Braidwood, Ill.) accounted for the three runs.

USF, however, scored only one run over the course of the next four innings, while Lincoln (2-21, 1-11 CCAC) countered with four of its own, including two after two were out in the sixth inning to force the tie. Tesch and McGuire turned the tide in the seventh inning with both of their hits also coming after two were out.

The Saints (10,11 8-7) also received quality relief pitching down the stretch with Sean Michalak (FR/New Lenox, Ill.)Nick Villasenor (SR/Addison, Ill.), and Ryan Daly (FR/Plainfield, Ill.) all tossing a scoreless inning and Michalak (1-1) earning his first collegiate victory and Daly his first collegiate save.

Starter Colin Kelly (SR/Tinley Park, Ill.) also pitched well, allowing just one run (unearned) over his four innings of work.

Second baseman Dolan Nicholson (SR/Denton, Texas) was the only Saint to record more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with one run scored.

The victory enabled the Saints to sweep the three-game set from first-year league member Lincoln. Another three-game set versus Trinity International University begins on Friday (April 9) when USF travels to Deerfield for a 3 pm first pitch before returning home for a Saturday doubleheader at 1 pm.
