ROMEOVILLE, Ill. --- Falling behind 4-0 after the first inning, the University of St. Francis baseball team could never recover, eventually dropping a 7-4 decision to neighboring rival and NCAA II opponent Lewis University on Thursday afternoon.
Five straight Flyers reached base safely after the first out of the game was recorded leading to the four-run outburst. Michael O'Brien's home run was the big blow, driving in the first two runs of the game.
USF (19-17) rallied for three runs in the top of the second inning to pull to within 4-3 with first baseman Joe McGuire (SR/Lockport, Ill.) (2-for-3) matching O'Brien with a two-run home run. USF's other run in the inning came home on a sacrifice fly by Luke Ketchum (GR/Springfield, Ill.).
Lewis (19-14) tacked on one run in both the fourth and fifth innings before the two teams exchanged single runs in the seventh inning. USF's tally scored on an error.
Michael Beaudoin (SR/Sycamore, Ill.) (2-2) suffered the loss for the Saints, who travel to Elgin, Ill. on Friday to face Judson University in a single game beginning at 3 pm.
The two Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference teams complete the three-game weekend series on Saturday at DuPage Medical Group Field with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
