Saints Get Back on Track With Sweep of Trinity International

DEERFIELD, Ill. --- For the second time this season, University of St. Francis' Hannah Vachon (JR/Oxford, Mich.) doubled her pleasure when she went to the softball diamond, earning a pair of victories on the same day as the result of USF's 3-1 and 10-2 wins over Trinity International University in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

Like she did on Saturday, Vachon (8-2) went the distance in the opener before recording the final seven outs in relief in the nightcap to collect the pair of wins.

Both games were tight despite the lopsided second-game figures. Trinity International (11-19, 4-12 CCAC) had the tying run on first base in the seventh inning of the opener and had the second-game contest tied at two-all before the Saints (18-6, 8-4) put up eight runs over the final two innings.

Left fielder/pitcher Bridget McDermott (SO/Palos Heights, Ill.) and pitcher/designated player Madisen Tucker (JR/St. John, Ind.) both drove in runs in each end of the twinbill.

Game 1 --- USF 3, Trinity International 1

The Saints jumped on top of Trinity International early with an RBI double from third baseman Danielle Callahan (JR/New Lenox, Ill.) (2-for-4) and a run-producing single from Tucker (2-for-4) in the first inning. They would make it a 3-0 game in the third inning via McDermott's RBI single.

Vachon allowed only two hits through the first six innings before Trinity International made things interesting in the seventh when it collected three of its five hits and ruined the shutout bid. The Trojans eventually brought the go-ahead run to the plate before Vachon got a game-ending flyout.

In the route-going performance, Vachon struck out six batters against only one walk.

First baseman Kayla Garcia (GR/Chicago, Ill.) joined Callahan and Tucker in the two-hit club.

Game 2 --- USF 10, Trinity International 2

A two-out error in the sixth inning by Trinity International opened the flood gates for the Saints, who turned the 2-2 tie into a 7-2 lead before adding three more runs in the seventh inning.

Two-run hits from Garcia and Tucker followed by an RBI single from McDermott did the damage in the sixth inning. For McDermott, it was her second run batted in of the game and her third on the day as part of an overall 4-for-8 afternoon. Shortstop Brittany Osborne (SO/Romeoville, Ill.) and center fielder Carlie Benes (JR/Valparaiso, Ind.) drove in two of the three runs in the seventh as part of 2-for-4 games for each of them.

Right fielder Maddy Eckberg (SO/New Lenox, Ill.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, as well.

USF initially opened up a 2-0 lead after three innings before Trinity International tied the contest with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Vachon went the final 2 2/3 innings to record her second win of the day.

The Saints take Wednesday off before traveling to Rosemont, Ill. on Thursday (April 29) to face Roosevelt University in a CCAC twinbill beginning at 2 pm.
