McGuire Powers Saints to Win Over Saint Xavier

JOLIET, Ill. --- Countering Saint Xavier University's six-run inning from one day earlier with one of its own on Sunday, the University of St. Francis baseball team used that outburst to salvage one game in the three-game Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series with an 8-5 victory at DuPage Medical Group Field.

First baseman Joe McGuire (SR/Lockport, Ill.) delivered the big blow in the third inning with his three-run home run to left field one batter after third baseman Josh Tesch(GR/Lockport, Ill.) started the scoring with his single to left field. Tesch's hit was the first of five straight for the Saints, all of which came after two were out.

Center fielder Dolan Nicholson (SR/Denton, Texas) (2-for-3, 2 runs) added a run-scoring double two batters after McGuire with the sixth run coming around to score on a Saint Xavier throwing error.

McGuire supplied his fourth RBI of the afternoon in the seventh inning, again with a two-out hit, this time on a bloop single to left centerfield to finish his day going 2-for-5 at the plate.

Saint Xavier (26-20, 15-10 CCAC) then made things interesting in the eighth inning. After picking up single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the Cougars plated three more runs in the eighth to make it a 7-5 game with runners at first and second base and two outs.

Right fielder Travis Schoonover (GR/Braidwood, Ill.), however, saved the day by making a sliding catch in short right field to end the threat. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run scored.

The Saints (19-16, 16-11) added an insurance run one half inning later when Saint Xavier was charged with its second unearned run of the contest.

Nick Villasenor (SR/Addison, Ill.) collected his third win of the season to even his record out at 3-3. He went the first seven innings, allowing nine hits, but only two runs. He struck out five batters without yielding a walk.

Colin Kelly (SR/Addison, Ill.) closed things out with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first save as a Saint.

The win snapped a four-game conference losing streak for USF, which had won 11 in a row in league play prior to those setbacks.

St. Francis is off until Wednesday (April 28) when it travels to Elgin, Ill. to face Judson University in a single game beginning at 4 pm.
