Saints Close Out Season With Loss to Saint Xavier

Box Score

CHICAGO --- Despite getting into Saint Xavier University territory six times, including five times at or inside the Cougar 40-yard line, the University of St. Francis could come up with nary a point in suffering a season-ending 7-0 Mid-States Football Association Midwest League loss on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.

The contest was the lowest-scoring affair in school history and the second-lowest scoring defeat in the history of the program. The only loss when the opposition scored less than seven points came on Nov. 2, 1991 when the Saints fell 5-3 to Northwood Institute (Mich.).

For the second time this season, USF's offense was unable to solve Saint Xavier's defense, being kept out of the end zone both times. In the first meeting, St. Francis' only touchdown came on a punt return with its other six points coming on a pair of field goals in a 19-12 loss on Feb. 6.

In that game, the Saints mustered up just 149 yards of total offense. On Saturday, it proved to be an even more challenging task. One week after netting a campaign-high 344 yards, USF's offense was held to a season-low 105 yards on 56 plays Saturday.

It marked St. Francis' lowest offensive output since totaling 102 yards against Marian University (Ind.) back on Nov. 7, 2015.

As it was a week ago, the Saints failed to get their running game going. Held to just one yard on 29 carries last week, head coach Joe Curry's team was a minus-29 on 17 rushing attempts Saturday with four sacks being the biggest culprit. The last of the four halted USF's final drive in Saint Xavier territory.

The other five drives in Saint Xavier territory ended on three punts, a missed 48-yard field goal and one of two interceptions on the day. The Saints also lost one other possession on a fumble.

The majority of the St. Francis offense again came from wide receivers Ravon Johnson (GR/Bolingbrook, Ill.) and Liam Eldridge (JR/San Clemente, Calif.), who combined to total 99 yards. Both caught six passes from Eric Maffie (SO/Coal Valley, Ill.) (17-of-39, 134 yards) with Johnson registering 61 yards and Eldridge 38.

The offensive woes overshadowed a strong defensive effort from the Saints, limiting Saint Xavier to just 214 yards, including only 75 through the air. Linebacker Chris Johnson (JR/Hillside, Ill.) led the team in tackles for the fifth time this season, amassing 12 stops, including one for loss on the day.

Saint Xavier's only points came on its second drive of the afternoon and looked to be just three points on a Mike Iturbe 31-yard field goal. But the Saints were called for being offsides on the attempt and the Cougars were able to get a fresh set of downs.

One play later Stuart Ross (12-of-19, 75 yards) found Kyle Quinn over the middle for a 10-yard touchdown to close the 11-play, 75-yard drive. After that, Saint Xavier was limited to 139 yards despite having a 10-minute time of possession advantage for the game.

Vance McShane had another big day for the hosts, leading them in both rushing (23 carries, 103 yards) and receiving (9 catches, 32 yards).

With only 119 plays between the two teams, the game was played in a speedy two hours, 22 minutes.

Saint Xavier finished its season 5-3 overall and 3-2 in league play. St. Francis, which dropped five of its six contests by one score or less, went 2-6, 2-3.
