Saints Gain Second Sweep in a Row

OWENSBORO, Ky. --- Shortstop Brittany Osborne (SO/Romeoville, Ill.) went 6-for-9 at the plate and University of St. Francis pitchers did not allow an earned run on the day in leading the Fighting Saints' softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Brescia University (Ky.) by 8-4 and 4-1 counts on Saturday afternoon. The pair of wins kept USF's record perfect at 4-0.

Designated player/pitcher Madisen Tucker (JR/St. John, Ind.) had another big day, as well. After claiming the Saints' first two wins in the circle Tuesday, Tucker notched another victory there, while also going 2-for-3 at the plate in both contests and scoring three runs on the day.

Game 1 --- USF 8, Brescia 4

The top of the order got it done for the Saints going 6-for-12 with seven of the eight runs batted in in the 1-3 slots. Osborne and third baseman Danielle Callahan (JR/New Lenox, Ill.) both drove in three runs with Osborne collecting three hits and Callahan two. In between the two players was center fielder Carlie Benes (JR/Valparaiso, Neb.), who also had a hit and one RBI.

All told, eight of nine Saints produced hits in the contest with Tucker and catcher Maddie Massaro (SO/Romeoville, Ill.) providing two hits and two runs each.

Bridget McDermott (SO/Palos Heights, Ill.) (1-0) had a shutout going into the seventh inning before two errors to start off the frame led to four unearned runs. She worked the first 6 2/3 innings, striking out five batters against five hits and one walk, before yielding to Tucker to get the last out.

Game 2 --- USF 4, Brescia 1

Osborne and Tucker came through with three and two hits again, respectively, with both driving in a run. Osborne tied the contest with her single in the fifth inning before Tucker helped her own cause by putting the Saints up for good with her RBI double in a two-run sixth inning.

Second baseman Christina Lorenzatti (FR/Beecher, Ill.) and first baseman Kayla Garcia (SR/Chicago, Ill.) also drove in runs with hits for USF.

Tucker came on in relief of starter Hanna Vachon (JR/Oxford, Mich.) in the circle to record her third win of the season. She pitched four scoreless innings, allowing five hits.

The Saints head back south on Tuesday (March 9) when they face Indiana University Southeast in a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm Central time.
