Garcia Powers Saints to Split with #24 Indiana Southeast

NEW ALBANY, Ind. --- A pair of home runs from first baseman Kayla Garcia (GR/Chicago, Ill.) enabled the University of St. Francis softball team to gain a split with NAIA No. 24 ranked Indiana University Southeast on Tuesday afternoon. After dropping a 3-0 first-game decision, Garcia powered the Saints to a 6-2 win in the nightcap with a late rally.

The first-game setback snapped a season-opening five-game win streak for the Saints, who were among others receiving votes in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Game 1 --- Indiana Southeast 3, USF 0

Blanked for the first time this season, the Saints managed only five hits in Game 1 and only once had a runner get as far as second base. That came in the sixth inning when shortstop Brittany Osborne (SO/Romeoville, Ill.) and center fielder Carlie Benes (JR/Valparaiso, Neb.) put together back-to-back hits after one out.

Indiana Southeast posted single runs in each of the first two innings and added one more in the third. Macie Zink opened the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly two batters later for the only run the Grenadiers needed.

Hannah Ogg gained the shutout in the circle for the hosts, striking out six batters against no walks and five hits.

Bridget McDermott (SO/Palos Heights, Ill.) (1-1) suffered the setback for the Saints.

Game 2 --- USF 6, Indiana Southeast 2

Trailing 2-1 after five innings, the Saints came up with five runs after two outs over the final two innings powered by a two-run home run from Garcia in the sixth inning and a two-run single from McDermott in the seventh. Starting pitcher Madisen Tucker (JR/St. John, Ind.) also drove in one run with one of her two hits in the contest.

Garcia initially tied the contest at one with her second home run of the season.

Third baseman Danielle Callahan (JR/New Lenox, Ill.) and McDermott both finished with three hits on the day, including a pair in Game 2. Callahan also scored a pair of runs in the second game.

Hannah Vachon (JR/Oxford, Mich.) (1-0) slowed down the Indiana Southeast offense with 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn her first victory of the 2021 campaign.

The Saints (5-1) head to St. Louis on Saturday where they will meet up with Missouri Baptist in a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
