JOLIET, Ill. --- Taylor Valant (SR/St. Anne, Ill.) registered a double-double and three other University of St. Francis players tallied no less than eight kills to lead the Fighting Saints volleyball team to a 25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Roosevelt University on Thursday night at the Sullivan Center.
Valant totaled 10 kills and 16 digs to rank second on the team in both categories. Brooklyn Withey (SR/Lapeer, Mich.) led the St. Francis offense with 12 kills, while Gabby Palemo (JR/Schaumburg, Ill.) paced the defense with 19 digs. The latter also had three service aces.
Lauren Stefanski (SR/Plainfield, Ill.) played a key role upfront for the Saints both offensively and defensively. On offense, she posted eight kills and a .333 attack percentage, while defensively, she was a part of seven blocks.
As a team, USF registered 10 block.
Other contributors included Desiree Anderson (FR/Joliet, Ill.) (nine kills, .294 attack pct.), Alexis Engst (JR/Bloomington, Ill.) (20 assists), and Hannah Pacheco (SO/Lockport, Ill.) (16 assists).
USF (7-5, 4-3 CCAC) used a 10-4 run in Set 1 to go up 22-13 en route to the nine-point win. The Saints also broke the last of six ties at 16-all by producing five of the next six points in the eventual Set 2 win.
Roosevelt (0-8, 0-8) kept things alive by rallying from an early five-point deficit to lead 20-18 with an 8-2 charge. USF got to within one point three times, but could not break the Lakers.
The Saints created separation in the finale with five unanswered points to go up 12-6 and never looked back.
St. Francis concludes its stretch of three matches in four days with another 7 pm contest on Friday, this time against University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis.
