JOLIET, Ill. --- University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis scored the final seven points of Set 4 followed by eight of the first nine points in Set 5 to rally for a 16-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-17, 15-10 victory over the University of St. Francis women's volleyball team on Friday night at the Sullivan Center.
Â
The loss put a damper on a night in which USF senior outside hitter Brooklyn Withey (Lapeer, Mich.) recorded the 1,000th kill of her career. She led the Saints (7-6) with 13 kills on the night to give her 1,012 over the 495 sets played in her career.
Â
Taylor Valant (St. Anne, Ill.) was right behind with 12 kills via a .367 attack mark.
Â
UHSP (9-11) countered with no fewer than five players registering at least nine kills and finishing with a .200 team attack percentage. Lauren Brown and Cassady Reno led the way with 14 kills each.
Â
USF jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by scoring 10 of the first 14 points in Set 1. The Saints then rallied from a 12-8 deficit in Set 2 to go up 19-17. UHSP, however, countered with its own 8-2 surge – including a string of four straight kills – to even the match at one set apiece.
Â
Similar to Set 1, the Saints built a 15-10 lead with a 9-2 push in Set 3 and never let the Eutectics get closer than three points the rest of the way.Â
Â
Set 4 featured eight ties before the closing run, which fueled the quick start to Set 5 and the victory for the guests.
Â
Other Saint leaders in the match included Gabby Paelmo (JR/Schaumbrug, Ill.) with 27 digs, Hannah Pacheco (SO/Lockport, Ill.) with 23 assists, and both Stephanie Woods (JR/Westchester, Ill.) and Lauren Stefanski (SR/Plainfield, Ill.) with four blocks each.
Â
After playing three matches in four days, the Saints have the next three days off before returning to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Tuesday (March 9) hosting Governors State University at 7 pm.
