JOLIET, Ill. --- After claiming a 25-23 first-set victory, the University of St. Francis women's volleyball team could not answer the serving of Cardinal Stritch University as the Wolves used 13 aces on the night to rally for a 23-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-22 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory at the Sullivan Center on Tuesday night.
Â
The first set was a back-and-forth affair before the Saints registered five of the final seven points, including two on a pair of kills from Desiree Anderson (Joliet, Ill.), to build a 1-0 advantage. Over the next three sets, however, the guests used big runs to earn the come-from-behind win.
Â
Tied at nine in the second set, Cardinal Stritch (5-3, 5-3 CCAC) rang up 11 unanswered points with six coming on aces and another three on kills. In the third set, the Wolves jumped out to a 10-1 advantage with the Saints getting only within 22-18 before falling.
Â
Similar to Set 2, Cardinal Stritch broke a 12-12 deadlock in a big way in Set 4 with seven of eight points to go up 19-13. USF would get to within 21-20, but could never force a tie.
Â
Hannah Schein produced eight of the 13 aces for CSU, while Sydney Hoffman and Jordan Cloyd were the only two players on the court to register double-figure kill totals. Hoffman had a match-high 18 with Cloyd at 12.
Â
USF countered with Anderson's nine kills and .308 attack percentage, and another eight kills from Stephanie Woods (JR/Westchester, Ill.). The Saints performed well at the net defensively, gaining 13 blocks topped by Lauren Stefanski's (SR/Plainfield, Ill.) eight and Peyton Baird's (Mendota, Ill.) five. Gabby Paelmo (JR/Schaumburg, Ill.) led in digs with 14.
Â
The Saints continue their busy week hosting Roosevelt University on Thursday (March 4) and University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis on Friday (March 5). Both matches commence at 7 pm in the Sullivan Center
