Big Third Quarter Enables Saints To Cruise To A 73-36 Victory

WHITING, Ind. --- A 31-5 scoring advantage in the third quarter enabled the University of St. Francis women's basketball team to cruise to a 73-36 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Calumet College of St. Francis on Wednesday night.

The third-quarter outburst was one more point for the Saints (4-1, 2-0 CCAC) than the first 20 minutes combined when USF opened up a 30-19 advantage. Head coach John McGinty's team hit nine of its 20 attempts from the field in the quarter, including three treys in five attempts, while adding another 10 points in 12 attempts at the free throw line.

On the opposite end, the Crimson Wave (0-2, 0-2) missed all ten of their field goal attempts in the third quarter with all five of their points coming at the free throw line. For the game, Calumet St. Joseph managed to shoot just 19.1 percent from the field (9-of-47) with only one three-pointer in 12 attempts, while also going 17-of-28 at the foul line (60.7 percent).

Between the second and third quarters, the hosts converted on just 2-of-21 attempts from the field (9.5 percent).

St. Francis finished at 35.1 percent overall (26-of-74) with eight treys in 22 attempts and 13-of-15 accuracy at the charity stripe.

The Saints also held a huge 58-32 advantage on the boards with 25 of the rebounds coming on the offensive end. That led to a 27-3 difference on second-chance points.

Six different Saints contributed seven or more points in the contest. Andriana Acosta led all players who saw the court on either team with both her 17 points and 16 rebounds. Justene Charlesworth added 15 points on five three-pointers, while Jorja Bolton totaled 13 points and eight rebounds.

Other St. Francis players to score included Amari Sims (9 points/8 rebounds), Braxtin Mickens (8/5), and Kalyn Sias-Chaney (7/4).

Zariah Frierson was the only Crimson Wave player to score in double figures finishing with 10 points.
