JOLIET, Ill. --- Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe St. Ambrose University put the double whammy on the University of St. Francis women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at Joliet Memorial Stadium. Not only did the Bees become the first team to solve St. Francis at home this year, but also became just the second team this season to shutout the Saints with their 3-0 decision.
The Saints (8-3, 5-3 CCAC) had come into the match outscoring the opposition 16-2 at home and winning all four of those decisions, three of which were blankings. But St. Ambrose needed just 3:17 to break the plane of the goal for what would turn out to be the only score it would need the rest of the afternoon.
Splitting their ten shots on goal evenly between the two halves, the Saints' best shot at scoring came late in the first half, which would have also tied the score at one-all. But St. Ambrose goalkeeper
Rachel Willette stopped each of
Hailey Bartlaga's two point blank attempts with six minutes to play before intermission to keep SAU on top 1-0.
The Fighting Bees (8-4, 6-2) then picked up an insurance goal on a free kick at 43:28 before adding their final tally ten minutes later.
Willette's ten saves on the afternoon resulted in her first shutout of the season. For St. Francis,
Yadira Estrada came up with seven saves.
Litzy Corona produced four of USF's ten shots on goal.
Prior to Saturday, each of St. Francis' previous two losses both came by just one goal.
