JOLIET, Ill. --- Needing a victory in its regular-season finale to punch its ticket to next week's Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, the University of St. Francis men's soccer team did just that with a pair of late goals to upset Cardinal Stritch University 2-0 at Joliet Memorial Stadium on Saturday night.
Zakhar Shkidchenko, the nation's leading goal scorer at the NAIA level, did the honors with his two scores less than four minutes apart. His first goal off an assist from
Pablo Rubio Guerra broke the scoreless deadlock at 83:39 and came less than one minute after USF goalkeeper
Carson Heglund stopped a barrage of three shots on goal by the Wolves.
Then, at 87:04,
Jesus Flores hooked up with Shkidchenko for the latter's 22nd goal of the season to send the fans in attendance for Senior Night in a state of euphoria. Prior to the match, the Saints recognized seniors
Erik Vega,
Carlos Ferrer Coto, and Shkidchenko.
USF (7-10-1, 7-5-1 CCAC) controlled much of the first half as evidenced by its four shots on goal to Cardinal Stritch's two. In the second half, however, it was the Wolves (9-5-2, 8-3-2) that put the pressure on with nine shots on goal to just one for the Saints before the outburst at the end.
Heglund was sparkling in goal throughout the night and especially in the second half when he stopped nine shots on goal. For the match, he totaled a season-high 11 saves to notch his third shutout of the season.
