LINCOLN, Ill.--- A 15-point unanswered scoring spurt late in the second half allowed Lincoln College to defeat the University of St. Francis' men's basketball team 65-55 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play at Jack D Nutt Arena on Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Lynx improved to 6-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while the Saints fell to 10-6 and 3-3 in the league.
Lewis Holey (SR/Sydney, Australia) nearly replicated his performance from exactly one week ago against Judson. The senior center once again finished the game shooting 6-for-6 from the field and made a pair of free throws to end the contest with a team-leading 14 points. Holey was the Saints' only player in double figures.
Deandre Johnson (SR/Watts, Calif.) recorded a double-digit rebound total for the fourth time this season as he grabbed 11 boards and also provided eight points.
The Saints led for the majority of the first half - including 35-30 at the break - by shooting 51.8 percent from the field (14-27). They extended that margin to eight points after a Johnson two-point field goal put them up 42-34 with 16:05 to play. The Saints still led 52-50 with 8:14 remaining, but would never score again until 30 seconds remained in the contest. In between, Lincoln netted 15 unanswered points to go up 65-52 and move over the .500 mark for the first time on the season.
USF, which ranks 21st in the NAIA in three-point scoring, had its worst shooting output from long range on Wednesday. The Saints hit on just three of 17 attempts to finish at 17.6 percent. Lincoln struggled just as much making only two of its 17 tries.
St. Francis, which has performed well in the second half throughout the season, was outscored 35-20 in the final 20 minutes on this night.
Lynx guard Peewee Brown scored 13 points in the second half and finished the game with 22. Brown led all scorers in the contest and was joined in double-digit scoring by Lijah Donnelly and Deandre Foreman. Donnelly finished with 11 points, while Freeman totaled 12 points. Lincoln finished the game shooting 47 percent from the floor (27-of-57) opposite USF's 45 percent mark (23-of-51).
Head coach Ryan Marks' team looks to bounce back on Saturday (Jan 30) afternoon when the Saints take on Cardinal Stritch University at the Sullivan Center. St. Francis defeated Cardinal Stritch 73-62 in Milwaukee earlier this season to earn its first conference win of the season. The non-conference matchup is scheduled for a 3 pm tipoff.
