JOLIET, Ill. --- An unanswered 23-point run in the second half and an overall 58 percent shooting mark from the field resulted in the University of St. Francis men's basketball team landing its biggest margin of victory of the season on Sunday afternoon with its 72-43 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) win at the Sullivan Center.
Â
Fourteen different players got in on the scoring act, which was as balanced as could be with the range of point totals being from 2-9 markers. Carter Fayhee (JR/Macomb, Ill.) led the way with nine points, while also tying for the team lead in rebounds with four. Russell Tillery (SR/Portland, Ore.) was right behind Fayhee putting up eight points and also grabbing four rebounds.Â
Â
Matt Attard (JR/Melbourne, Australia) found himself in the afternoon rotation, as well, for just the second time this season. The Australian native took advantage of his 19 minutes by knocking down seven points and grabbing three rebounds. EJ Charles (SO/Mokena, Ill.) also contributed seven points. Â
Â
Calumet St. Joseph's Daniel Carey led all scorers with 17 points.
Â
The Crimson Wave, who were playing their first game of the season on Sunday, got off to a strong start, gaining an 11-5 advantage after the first five-plus minutes. The six-point deficit proved to be the largest of the day for St. Francis, which used a Lewis Holey (SR/Sydney, Australia) dunk shortly thereafter to jumpstart a 16-1 run. That gave the Saints a 21-12 lead with 6:58 left in the half before settling for a 30-23 advantage at the break.
Â
USF would go on to dominate the final twenty minutes of play. Head coach Ryan Marks' team went on the unanswered run one third of the way through the second half to turn a 38-33 cushion into a 61-33 bulge. For the half, the Saints outscored their opponents 42-20 by shooting an impressive 68 percent from the field (17-of-25) opposite a 25 percent shooting mark after the break by the Crimson Wave.Â
Â
St. Francis was also able to score 25 points off 19 Calumet St. Joseph turnovers and, with its balanced numbers, had its bench outscore the Crimson Wave 45-6.Â
Â
With the win, the Saints (10-5, 3-2 CCAC) have already matched their victory count from one year ago with eight regular-season games still to play. They will look to ascend in the CCAC standings on Wednesday (Jan. 27) when they take on Lincoln College in Lincoln, Ill. The Saints defeated the Lynx at the Sullivan Center 80-72 in their previous matchup (Jan. 2). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm at Jack D.
