JOLIET, Ill. - For the fourth time in its last five appearances, the University of St. Francis men's soccer team experienced the thrill of victory as the Saints scored three consecutive goals including back-to-back ones from midfielder-forward Isaac Brown (FR/Rockton, Ill.) to post a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Trinity Christian this Saturday (Sept. 28) afternoon in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action at ATI Field in Joliet Memorial Stadium.
The USF win not only improves the Saints' overall record to 5-2-2 and 2-1-0 in the conference this season, but also upped their record in home matches to 3-1-2.
Trinity Christian (3-5-0, 0-2-0 CCAC) took an early 1-0 lead just 11:41 into the contest as Emmanuel Iradukunda tallied unassisted for his first goal of the year. The Trolls, who would be edged out 11-10 in shots for the match, maintained its one-goal advantage until early in the second half when USF netted the equalizer at 49:21 on a goal by midfielder Stefan Jakovljevic (JR/Bregenz, Austria) from a throw-in pass from midfielder-forward Anthony Marmolejo (FR/Plainfield, Ill.). The Saints were able to keep the Trolls off the scoreboard the rest of way due in part to the efforts of USF goalkeeper Carlos Ferrer Coto (JR/La Fresneda, Spain), who made a couple of key saves to hold TCC to the lone score.
While Ferrer-Coto and the Saints' defenders did a commendable job on the defensive side, USF's offense kicked into high gear as Brown racked up back-to-back second-half goals. Brown would net the go-ahead goal at 53:41 as Stefan Jakoviejvic picked up a point with an assist. The Saints cushioned their lead 34 minutes later as Brown found the back of the Trolls' net again albeit this time unassisted with a little over eight minutes remaining to be played in the contest.
For the match, Trinity Christian posted a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks and had 10 fouls to USF's seven.
USF goalkeeper Coto turned aside five of six shots face on goal in improving his season mark to 5-2-2. TCC goalkeeper Mathis Muller garnered three saves as his season's record drops to 3-5-0.
Leading the way offensively was Brown with a squad-most three total shots (all on goal) while Stefan Jakovljevic (JR/Bregenz, Austria) and Marmolejo each registered a pair of shots.
USF returns to the pitch this Tuesday (Oct. 1) as the Saints visit the Governors State Jaguars in a 6 p.m. (CT) conference match at Marian Catholic High School's Spartan Stadium in Chicago Heights, Ill.
