CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- Sergio Peres (JR/ Goiania, Brazil) extended the University of St. Francis men's soccer team's winning streak to a season-high three matches with his game-winning goal with just under 10 minutes to play in an eventual 3-2 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Governors State University on Tuesday (Oct. 1) night at Marian Catholic High School's Spartan Stadium.
Peres' goal was his first as a Saint and came on a direct free kick on the near sideline from 25 yards out, sailing over the top of the outstretched hands of Governors State goalkeeper Sergio Mendieta. It also marked the second goal by a Saints' player after Governors State had forced a tie less than five minutes earlier.
The first time came at 52:58, just 2:39 after Governors State got on the board for the first time to knot the score at 1-1. Reuel Erastus-Obilo (SR/Potters Bar/ England) netted his team-leading seventh goal of the season to put the Saints back on top.
The score remained 2-1 until Zakhar Shkidchenko forced the second tie at 75:34. Just under five minutes later, the Saints were back on top courtesy of Peres' goal at 80:11. From there, the Saint defense took control, not allowing another shot the rest of the way.
USF's other goal and the only tally through the first 50-plus minutes came from Hameed Soberu (JR/Lagos, Nigeria) who also recorded his first goal as a Saint on assists from Oscar Leon (SO/Cary, Ill.) and Anthony Marmolejo (FR/Plainfield, Ill.) at 32:23.
Both goalkeepers registered four saves on the night with Carlos Ferrer Coto (JR/La Fresneda, Spain) gaining the win in goal for the Saints.
Governors State (4-4, 1-3 CCAC) finished the night outshooting the Saints, 16-14, but the Saints produced one more shot on goal, 7-6.
USF (6-2-2, 3-1) plays its homecoming match on Saturday facing CCAC foe Robert Morris University Illinois at 7:30 pm at ATI Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium.
