Angel Mata joined the Fighting Saints in July of 2025 as an assistant coach to the corners for the football team. The 2025-26 season will mark Mata’s first season assisting the program.
At St. Francis, Mata assists the program in coordination of practice plans, individual player development, and implementation of game strategies.
A native of Highland, Ind., Mata was a three-year student-athlete at University of St. Francis (Ill.) from 2020-2022 after spending his first two seasons at NCAA Division I Indiana University. While at USF, Mata accumulated 103 total tackles (65 solo, 38 assisted), 13 interceptions, 11 pass break-ups, and one sack as a defensive back while seeing action in 26 games played. Mata twice received Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) All-Conference accolades (2021, 2022), and was named to the NAIA All-American first team in 2022.
Mata graduated from University of St. Francis (Ill.) in the May of 2023 with a bachelor’s in Marketing.
