Saints Drop 2-1 Decision To Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. -- After falling behind 2-0, the University of St. Francis women's soccer team responded by scoring a goal of its own in the final 30 minutes of the second half, but could not build any further upon that momentum, ultimately finishing the day with a 2-1 loss to Goshen College (Ind.) on Saturday afternoon.  With the defeat, the Fighting Saints fall to an overall record of 2-3-0.

First Half
The first 45 minutes showcased fairly even offensive numbers across the board for both squads, with Goshen (2-3-0) edging out the Saints in total shots, 17 to 10.  The hosts gained the first goal of the afternoon on its tenth shot attempt in the 19th minute of play with a Johannah McDonald rebound attempt finding its way into the back of the USF net.  The initial drive looked to be defended well by St. Francis, but after a diving save by USF keeper Giselle Mata, McDonald regained possession off the rebound and took advantage of the opportunity to mark the score at 1-0.  USF's offense struggled to counter with any successful looks over the next 26 minutes of play allowing Goshen to take the one-score lead into the halftime break.

Second Half
In the second half, USF's defense was quickly met with heavy pressure from the Maple Leaf frontline between the 45th and 58th minutes, with the hosts rattling off five of the frame's first eight shots.  Goshen's constant pressure soon turned successful in the 61st minute, when the Maple Leafs capitalized off a deflection in the box to take a 2-0 lead over the Saints.  The two-score advantage lasted for just 1:46, however, before USF's Jalyssa Villafuerte connected for a score after a Goshen foul allowed for Villafuerte's free kick to sail past GC keeper Hailey Ballast.  Goshen's defense would then hold USF to just four more shots the remainder of the way, compared to the hosts' eight, in helping secure the 2-1 win.

For the night, St. Francis took 20 shots, compared to GC's 31, and was led by Carisma Rosales, who had 10 attempts with two tries on-target.  Ariadne Gonzalez's three shots resulted in one save while Villafuerte produced her first goal of the season on her only shot attempt of the day.  In the net, Mata made 13 saves, denying all but two of Goshen's attempts.

Up Next
St. Francis will be back at home on Tuesday night (Sept. 8) to take on Concordia University Chicago in its second-ever match-up against the Cougars.  Kickoff for the non-conference contest is slated to commence at 7 pm at Joliet Memorial Stadium.
