Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Saints Win in Five Sets Over Mount Mary

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of St. Francis women's volleyball team gained its fourth conference win of the season Tuesday when the Fighting Saints closed out the night with a 3-2 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory with scores of 27-25, 25-23, 23-25, 18-25, 15-9 over Mount Mary University (Wis.) at the Bloechl Center in Milwaukee, Wis.  With the win, the Saints improve to 6-7 on the season, and 4-2 in league play.

While each of the four sets were tight for most of the night, the Blue Angels held a slight advantage for the majority of the contest.  In the first set, neither team extended the lead beyond a three-point margin until a Delani Kirstein kill broke a 20-20 tie to give USF its first lead of the frame.  Mount Mary, however, looked to gain the momentum back after a subsequent kill and service ace allowed the Blue Angels to pull back to tie the score at 25-all, but a huge block from Aubrey Phillips and Sarah Schmidt would spoil MMU's hopes by accounting for one of USF's remaining two points to solidify the 27-25 Set 1 win.

Set 2 showcased the two teams trading punches all the way throughout the entirety of the 48-rally stanza.  After 16 tied scores, MMU found itself winning the race to 20 points once again with a one-point advantage (20-19), before the Saints tied the game for the 17th time with a kill on the next rally.  St. Francis would then lay on the gas and string together three kills and two service aces to account for five of the set's remaining eight points for the 25-23 win.

Mount Mary (2-13, 1-4) put up its biggest fight at the start of the third set, grabbing an early 15-13 advantage.  Kills by Sara McGraw, Schmidt and Alyssa Teske allowed the Saints to take the lead and extend its advantage to 22-19, but a string of ill-timed USF attacking errors resulted in Mount Mary surging back ahead 23-22.  The Saints would garner the next point via a kill, but it was too little, too late as MMU did not relent in earning the win with its 25-23 victory.

The Blue Angels wasted no time in flexing some muscle over St. Francis in Set 4, racing out to a 10-4 lead.  The hosts later reproduced another six-point advantage (13-7) before the Saints registered back-to-back kills followed by two service aces to come within one point at 13-12.  The Blue Angels would settle in from that point forward, however, capturing 12 of the last 18 rallies for the seven-point victory at 25-18.

With the match now tied at two games apiece, the stage was set for a winner-take-all fifth frame.  St. Francis came out of the gate hot and rattled off five of its first eight points via kills, with a trio of them coming off the hand of Phillips to mark the score at 8-4.  The Blue Angels retaliated quickly, however, with a 4-1 swing to come within one point at 9-8, but three straight kills from Emma Rodriguez, Teske and Phillips forced Mount Mary to call a timeout with the Saints only needing three more points to seal the victory.  The breather would only favor the Saints as a MMU setting error followed by two clutch kills by Teske allowed USF to prevail 15-9 in the fifth frame and win the match 3-2.

St. Francis finished the night with a .203 hitting percentage - which included a .346 attacking clip in the final frame - and was led in kills by Teske and Kirstein with 15 apiece.  Kirstein also topped the Saints with 21 digs, while Phillips (14 kills) authored a team-best seven block assists.  Landry Hall (21) and Kennedy Walker (18) paced the setters for a combined 39-assist performance.
