FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- A strong outing from the University of St. Francis women's soccer team propelled the Fighting Saints to a 2-0 victory over Saint Francis University (Ind.) in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon. The two teams remained scoreless at the break before the Saints jumped ahead 1-0 sixteen minutes into the second half courtesy of an
Ariadne Gonzalez goal.
Sofia Velazquez later added on the cherry topper as USF improved to 1-1-0 overall.
First Half
In the opening half, both squads had solid opportunities to score, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. St. Francis targeted the goal three times with those opportunities coming in the 3rd, 8th and 21st minutes. The Saints outshot the Cougars (2-1-0) in the first 45 minutes of action, 8-4, but could not connect for a score, keeping the game tied 0-0.
Second Half
Gonzalez provided the first goal of the match for the Saints, doing so in the 61st minute. Sixteen minutes after USF took the 1-0 lead, Velazquez pushed the Saints' scoring margin up to two in collecting her first goal of the 2026 campaign in the 77th minute. The Saints outshot Saint Francis in the final 45 minutes of action, 10-8, with
Giselle Mata recording four saves in the period to keep the opponents' scoreless.
St. Francis was led offensively by Gonzalez and
Isabel Diez on the day, who each recorded a team-high six shot attempts apiece.
USF outshot the hosts 18-12 on the night, including 8-4 on goal.

The Saints will have two days of rest before taking the field again on Saturday, August 29 to play St. Ambrose University (Iowa) at 12 pm at Joliet Memorial Stadium.
