PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. --
Jaelynn Taylor and
Kaitlyn Schofield each connected for a homerun as part of a combined 3-for-4, five RBI day at the plate for the duo and
Isabella Landeros collected a pair of hits and drove in a run, but Viterbo University (Wis.) pulled away late from the University of St. Francis softball team, scoring a 10-6 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Fighting Saints (29-10, 15-3 CCAC) led 3-0 in the first inning after Taylor blasted her seventh homerun of the season with a three-run shot over the rightfield wall, scoring
Kylie Cook and
Emily Hurst who had each previously reached base via base hits. Taylor also later accounted for the Saints' fourth run in the third inning to knot the score at 4-4 as a result of Viterbo taking the lead in the top half of that same frame by way of a two-out grand slam. The guests, however, opened the floodgates in the fifth inning when the V-Hawks (12-23, 7-8-3) authored a five-run frame widening their advantage to 9-4.
Schofield then sparked the USF offense in the sixth inning by blasting a longball of her own over the left field fence before Landeros capped off the Saints' scoring in the seventh with a RBI double in the right center gap to mark the final score at 10-6.
Makayla Nortman led the 13-hit attack for the V-Hawks, who would go on to score one more time in the seventh inning.  She went 3-for-4 with one run batted in. Alexis Watson drove in two runs on two hits, including a two-out double to centerfield that sparked her team's decisive five-run frame.
Along with Taylor and Landeros, Hurst was the only other Saint to register two hits on the day amongst USF's ten total in the contest.
Emily Boyle (15-4) picked up the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs on eight hits and five walks, while striking out three.
