Saints Suffer Setback With Lopsided Loss To Cumberland

LEBANON, Tenn. -- Cumberland University (Tenn.) handed the University of St. Francis baseball team a lopsided loss on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Fighting Saints 20-1 in a non-conference matchup at Woody Hunt Stadium.

USF (1-3) managed just five hits in the seven-inning shortened affair, two of which came in the fourth inning, that turned into the lone run for USF.  After Jake Merda singled to lead off the frame, Ryan Louthan later produced a double which paved the way for an Ethan Fleming groundout to plate the run.

Mitchell Thomas, Will Calcaterra and Dominik Alberico recorded the other three singles for USF.

After scoring five runs in the first inning and another in the second, Cumberland (6-3) hit for the cycle in the third inning as part of its eight-run, 10-hit frame, which included two solo home runs.  The Phoenix added runs in each of its remaining at-bats, including a three-run fourth inning, followed by a two-run fifth, before scoring one more time in the sixth stanza.

Nick Huspen was the lone Saint pitcher among five that went to the mound that did not yield multiple earned runs.  He pitched one inning and allowed three hits, while producing two popouts.

For the game, USF pitchers walked one and hit another, while also yielding 29 hits.

Cumberland's Wilser Then led all hitters in the contest, producing four hits in four at-bats, while falling a homerun short of the cycle.  He also scored two runs.
