Saints Celebrate Seniors With 3-0 Sweep Over Mount Mary

JOLIET, Ill. -- The University of St. Francis women's volleyball team honored its senior class in celebratory style on Saturday afternoon with a three-set win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Mount Mary University (Wis.) at the Sullivan Center.  The 25-18, 25-22, 25-20 victory marks win number nine on the season for USF, carrying the Fighting Saints to a 9-14 overall mark and a 7-8 league record.  St. Francis honored its four seniors - Diana Fields, Landry Hall, Sarah Schmidt and Abby Sippel - before the matchup against the Blue Angels.

The first set showcased itself to be a back-and-forth battle with the game sitting at a 15-15 knotted score midway through the stanza.  The momentum began to dramatically shift to St. Francis' side at that point, however, after kills from Emma Rodriguez, Sarah Schmidt and Delani Kirstein widened USF's scoring margin to seven points (24-17) before Alyssa Teske connected for a kill to take the final point and secure the 25-18 Set 1 win for USF.

St. Francis started slow in second set as the Saints saw Mount Mary jump out to a 7-2 lead at the start of the frame.  A kill from Rodriguez, however, gave the Saints the possession of the ball and started a monstrous 13-0 swing fueled by 13 consecutive serves from Abigail Ryan to push the score to 19-6.  Mount Mary chipped away to cut its deficit to within one at 22-21, but the Saints put away the guests' chances as they closed the second set with a 25-22 win.

USF had the upper hand over Mount Mary throughout the entire third set after showcasing a back-and-forth battle in the opening game.  After jumping out to a 10-1 advantage, the Blue Angels responded by producing a 6-0 run, but the Saints would quickly halt that momentum with three straight kills before putting together a rally powered by five more kills and three service aces to soar ahead 20-13.  MMU was able to string together two kills and a block in response and halt the hosts' drive, but it was St. Francis that would win in the end with a 25-20 final score.

As a team, the Saints posted a hitting percentage of .204.  USF had 40 total kills with Kirstein and Teske pacing the effort with 10 each.  Landry Hall led the team with 18 assists, and Kirstein led the defense with 10 digs.
