DAVENPORT, Iowa -- A big offensive day carried the University of St. Francis baseball team to a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon as the Fighting Saints scored 7-4 and 9-2 victories over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe St. Ambrose Univeristy at Slammers Stadium.
Plenty of Fighting Saints produced in the offensive attack with no fewer than six players collecting multiple hits on the day, including
Mitchell Thomas, who had a pair of multi-hit games.Â
Ethan Fleming went 6-for-9, and also registered multiple hits in each end of the twinbill.
On the pitching mound, starters
Sean Michalak and
Jacob Jurka as well reliver
Cristopher Villwock combined for five strikeouts.
Game 1: Â USF 7, St. Ambrose 4
After being held scoreless in the first inning, St. Francis' offense exploded in the second frame with five straight batters reaching base in a one-out rally that resulted in five Saints crossing the plate.
Mitchell Thomas (two),
Nate Maliska (one),
Max Montgomery (one) and
Jake Merda (one) all collected RBIs in the decisive inning, while
Brian Graves and
Cliff Vickers combined to coax two free passes.
The Saints collected two insurance runs in the fifth inning, with
Drew Dant (single) circling the bases on wild pitches and
Brian Graves (hit by pitch) being driven in via
Ethan Fleming's second hit of the day.
After allowing seven hits and two runs over the first four innings of play, USF starting pitcher
Sean Michalak (4-1) settled in to record his fourth win of the season on the mound. He allowed just one hit over his final three innings of work, while striking out one against one walk in the complete game performance.
Game 2: Â USF 7, St. Ambrose 4
After falling behind 1-0 after three innings of play, the Saints got on the board in the fourth inning with two unearned runs after a fielding error from St. Ambrose extended the inning. Fleming and Thomas each collected a RBI in the frame, while Graves and Vickers also registered base hits.Â
St. Francis would break the game open in the sixth inning with five straight batters reaching base which resulted in four runs crossing the plate before later scoring runs in each of the final two frames to finalize the score at 9-2.
Dant, Graves, Vickers, Fleming and Thomas all collected multiple hits in the contest with Thomas driving home three runs.
Jurka took credit for the win on the mound, upping his record to 2-3 on the year. Villwock worked the final three innings in relief to pick up his first save of the season, retiring all nine batters he faced.

The Saints will travel to Hammond, Ind. to take on the Pride of Purdue University Northwest. The non-conference contest is slated to begin at 1 pm at Laborers' Local 41 Field.
