Saints Drop Series To Indiana South Bend With Second Doubleheader Sweep

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Indiana University South Bend dealt the University of St. Francis baseball team its second doubleheader defeat in as many days at Four Winds Park at Coveleski Stadium with the Titans' 15-5 and 14-6 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victories on Saturday. The Saints had come into the four-game series on Friday afternoon tied for first place with Saint Xavier University in the league standings, but, after the series sweep against IUSB, have now dropped into a tie for fifth place with the Titans.

Even though St. Francis (19-25, 15-13 CCAC) registered 10 hits in each contest, Indiana South Bend (20-26, 15-13) put up runs early in each of the two games and never looked back courtesy of its combined 33 hits on the day.  Cliff Vickers (five hits), Drew Dant (three), Jake Merda (two) and Ethan Fleming (two) were the only Saints to record hits in each end of the twinbill.

Game 1:  Indiana South Bend 15, USF 5
After the Saints put up one run in the top of the first inning via a Merda RBI single, Indiana South Bend ran away with the contest in the bottom half of the frame, putting up nine runs with 11 Titans reaching base.  A two-out, three-run home run capped off the disastrous inning, which included eight IUSB hits.

The hosts would go on to score three additional runs in the fourth inning before the Saints posted a quartet of their own in the top of the fifth frame via RBI singles from Vickers (two), Jake Klepacz (one) and Dant (one).

The Titans would go on to score three more runs over the next two innings en route to finalizing the score at 15-5.

St. Francis' 10 hits were amassed by eight different players, with Vickers and Klepacz registering two apiece.

Game 2: Indiana South Bend 14, USF 6
The Saints trailed 5-0 when Dant recorded his second home run of the season in the third inning to pull USF to within 5-2.  Indiana South Bend, however, opened the floodgates one-half inning later when the Titans connected for four hits, including back-to-back doubles, leading to a four-run frame.

USF took advantage of a defensive miscue by the hosts to plate three runs in the fourth inning to mark the score at 9-5 before adding one more run in the ninth.  Jack Ryan (2-for-5, five RBIs) led the 14-hit attack for the Titans, who would go on to score five more times in the seventh inning.  On the day, Ryan went 6-for-9 with four runs scored and 11 runs batted in.

Dant (2-for-4), Vickers (3-for-5) and Max Montgomery (2-for-5) all posted multiple hits in the contest for the Saints, with Merda, Ethan Fleming and Mitchell Thomas each registering one.

The Saints will make the short trip to Romeoville next Tuesday (April 22) to take on NCAA II Lewis University in a non-conference, single-game matchup.  First pitch at Brennan Field is set for 2 pm.
