CHICAGO --- Saint Xavier University powered up for 11 home runs against the University of St. Francis baseball team on Friday afternoon to score 11-0 and 13-3 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victories and claim all four games in the weekday series.
The Cougars (15-15, 8-6 CCAC) totaled 29 hits on the day and authored three home runs in a pair of innings over the two contests. Adam Orzech (4-for-7, 5 RBIs) provided three of the home runs, Justin Massingale (5-for-8, 6 RBIs) had two and Sean Moore (4-for-8, 2 RBIs) homered once and doubled twice.
USF (12-19, 8-8) countered with a pair of home runs off the bat of
Brian Graves, which were the first two of his St. Francis career. Both round-trippers came in Game 2, while
Max Montgomery posted two hits in each contest to finish with a 4-for-7 afternoon.
A 0-for-13 blemish with runners in scoring position over the two games led to the Saints being limited to the three runs on the afternoon.
Game 1: Saint Xavier 11, USF 0
Saint Xavier built a 7-0 lead after the first two innings of the opener via three home runs and scored at least one run in five of their six at-bats. Half of the Cougars' hits (6 of 12) went for extra bases, including five home runs.Â
Moore and Massingale each produced three-hit games and provided one of the home runs. Massingale drove in four runs and Moore did a pair.
Montgomery had two of USF's four hits with
Cliff Vickers and
Nate Maliska collecting the other two.
Three Saint Xavier pitchers combined on the shutout.
Game 2: Saint Xavier 13, USF 3
The hosts rang up six home runs in the nightcap, including three in the second inning to build a 4-0 lead. The Cougars added three more home runs in a six-run seventh inning to pull away. Jackson McFarland's grand slam was the big blow.
Orzech accounted for two of the home runs. He, along with three other SXU players, had a multi-hit game.
Graves' home runs came in back-to-back at-bats in the fifth and seventh innings. USF's other run scored on a wild pitch.
