JOLIET, Ill. -- Aided by a six-run sixth inning, the University of St. Francis baseball team picked up its second win of the season on Tuesday afternoon with a 9-6 victory over NCAA II Roosevelt University. Seven Fighting Saint players in all recorded at least one hit in the contest, improving USF's record to 2-5.
The hosts spotted Roosevelt a 3-0 lead after the first half-inning before the Saints scored nine of the final 12 runs of the contest across four innings.
Alex Mielcarz and
Max Montgomery each had a pair of hits as part of USF's nine-hit attack. Montgomery and
Jake Merda drove in two runs each.
Montgomery collected his two RBIs in the big sixth inning, where
Will Calcaterra and Merda each helped knock in one run as part of USF's five-hit, four-walk frame. Merda also had a RBI single in the third inning and joined six other Saints in scoring at least one run in the contest.
After a shaky first inning in which he allowed three hits and the three runs, freshman
Frank Curbis settled down to allow four hits over his final three frames and struck out one on the afternoon against zero walks.
Jacob Jurka (1-0) came on in relief to work the next three scoreless innings and pick up the victory. He allowed just two batters to reach base, one on a hit and the other via a walk.
Ethan Fleming tossed the final two innings, striking out two batters and allowing three hits for his first save of the season.
James Berry and Kekoa Ogawaeach each had two hits for Roosevelt (0-3).
