JOLIET, Ill. -- The University of St. Francis men's soccer team suffered a 6-1 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference loss to Judson University on Saturday evening. The Eagles proved to be too much for the Fighting Saints to handle as the USF defense allowed a total of 17 shot attempts compared to St. Francis' four. With the loss the Saints fall to 2-9-1 overall and 2-5-0 in league play.
First Half
St. Francis came out on the offensive to start the opening half, registering two shots in the match's first three minutes of play. The aggressive approach worked in USF's favor as the Saints were the first to notch a tally on the scoreboard when an assist from
Juan Jimenez off a corner kick resulted in a successful goal from
William Morel in the 3rd minute of play. Judson (4-5-5, 3-0-3 CCAC) evened the score at 1-1 just six minutes later and then quickly took the 2-1 lead 2 minutes and 13 seconds thereafter on back-to-back shot attempts that found the back of the USF net at the 9:35 and 11:48 marks, respectively. Things stayed quiet for the next 17 minutes until another offensive outburst of back-to-back goals in the 28th and 29th minutes widened the score to 4-1 in Judson's favor. The Eagles kept on the attack and controlled possession the remainder of the half, but the USF backline stayed strong, allowing just one more Eagle shot attempt in helping to keep the score at 4-1 heading into the break.
Second Half
The Eagles added an insurance goal quickly into the second half when a shot off a deflection from a USF defender resulted in JU's fifth goal of the game at 54:37. With its incessant approach proving to be successful, Judson continued to hit the offensive gas and rattled off two more unanswered shots before connecting on its third try with 17 minutes remaining in the contest to ballon the score to 6-1. With the minutes winding down, Judson tacked one more shot attempt 10 minutes before the final buzzer sounded to solidify the 6-1 outcome.
The Eagles outshot the Saints 17-4, including 12-3 in attempts on goal. Along with Morel's goal,
Sergio Fernandez-Arango and
Peer Langenhuijsen provided two of USF's four shots, both of which were on goal, while Jimenez accounted for the remaining attempt.
Elio Di Gennaro recorded three saves in the first half, while tallying three more in the second half for the six total denials.
