JOLIET, Ill. -- Extending its winning streak to five matches, the University of St. Francis women's volleyball team claimed its seventh sweep of the season and a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory on Tuesday night with its win over Trinity Christian College. With the 25-22, 25-22, 25-15 three-set triumph, the Fighting Saints improve their overall record to 14-11 on the season and 10-2 in league play.
The first set proved to be a battle with the two teams showcasing a 15-15 tie score midway through the frame. The Saints were the first to strike, jumping ahead 17-15 after the next two rallies, but the Trolls quickly charged ahead by responding with a 5-1 run aided by a trio of kills to win the race to 20 (20-18). The teams continued to trade points the remainder of the set until
Riley Hungate authored two dominating kills to drive the score to 24-22 in USF's favor forcing the visitors to call a timeout. The breather benefited the Saints with
Ann Simon quickly collecting the final point of the set with a service ace, securing the 25-22 St. Francis win.
In the second set, St. Francis and Trinity Christian (9-13, 8-4 CCAC) went back and forth for the first 20 points before a 4-0 run by the Saints would give them their first lead of the stanza (13-12) behind two kills from
Cadence Wodrich and
Emma Rodriguez. TCC answered back with a pair of kills to shift the offense back to its side of the net, but not long after, kills from Hungate,
Jenna Wasco and
Delani Kirstein, followed by a crowd-raising block from Hungate and Kirstein, would pace the Saints' offense to take a 22-20 lead.
Alyssa Teske and Wasco kept the crowd loud after teaming up to author back-to-back kills before Hungate provided a thundering kill of her own to give the Saints the 25-22 win in set two.
St. Francis put together a dominant performance in set three after getting out to an early 15-5 lead, led by five kills and a block. TCC responded by getting as close as three points (15-12), but the Trolls struggled to get any sort of consistent offense going, as the Saints continued to add to their lead and polish off their sweep with a 25-15 victory in set three.
Hungate paved the way for St. Francis with 12 kills and 15 digs, while Wasco added nine kills while only making two errors in producing a .467 attack percentage. Kirstein had the third highest kills on the team with seven while also picking up two blocks. Teske (24) and
Talia Messana (8) both did work by dishing a combined 32 assists. On the defensive end, behind Hungate's 15, Messana chipped in with 10 digs and
Mya Broadway added eight.
