OSKALOOSA, Iowa --- The University of St. Francis women's volleyball team won a pair of matches 3-2 and 3-0 to begin the William Penn University (Iowa) Labor Day Classic on Friday at the Penn Activity Center. With the two wins, the Fighting Saints move to 4-2 overall on the season.
University of St. Francis vs. Culver-Stockton
The Saints began the day with a win over Culver-Stockton College (Mo.). USF ran away with the first set 25-19. The two teams then traded wins in sets 2-4 with each set registering a 25-23 final score before the Saints rebounded to hold off CSC 15-12 in the deciding set.
Riley Hungate (14 kills) and
Taylor Connolly (10) both registered double-digit kill totals in the match.
Ann Simon captained the back court with a team-high 19 digs.
University of St. Francis vs. Hannibal-LaGrange
Against Hannibal-LaGrange, USF found its flow offensively from the start, recording an attack percentage of .315 for the match. The Saints saw three players attack at an above .500 percentage, including sophomore
Kylie Kany (.750), sophomore
Sarah Schmidt (.750), and freshman
Sophie Knazur (.538). Defensively,
Desiree Anderson recorded a team-high 12 digs, while Knazur garnered two blocks upfront.
Kaylie Sippel and
Alyssa Teske combined for 29 assists with Sippel registering 18 in the match. Sippel also totaled four service aces, while
Willow Mueller chipped in three.
The Saints conclude the tournament Saturday with two more matches. USF is scheduled to face Waldorf University (Iowa) at 9 am, with Graceland University (Iowa) to follow at 1 pm.
