Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Saints Suffer First Loss of Season

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of St. Francis women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday as the Fighting Saints dropped a hard-fought battle to University of Saint Francis (Ind.).  The 2-0 first-half deficit was too much to overcome as the Saints fell to the Cougars 3-1.

First Half
The game began with aggressive strategies from both sides with each team taking a number of shots in the opening 12 minutes. The Cougars (3-0-0) were able to take a 2-0 lead, however, with back-to-back goals in the 17th and 20th minutes of play.  The Saints (0-1-1) responded by staying aggressive with sophomore Kelly Flores finding her way into the Cougar backfield.  She took two shots in the 26th minute with both missing wide right.  USF tried to put the ball in the net four more times in the remaining 15 minutes with shots from newcomer Ariadne Gonzalez, Flores and two from sophomore Isabel Diez Each of the four attempts came up empty to send the game into the halftime break with the Cougars holding onto a 2-0 lead.

Second Half
In the third minute of the second half, Gonzalez capitalized on her first shot attempt with assistance from Diez, sailing the ball into the back of the Saint Francis (Ind.) net.  With the deficit down to 2-1, both teams traded shot attempts before the Cougars connected on their third goal of the match in the 61st minute.  St. Francis (Ill.) would take the remaining five shots of the affair with each attempt coming up empty, missing high or wide of the net on four of the tries, resulting in the final 3-1 score.

Game Notes
  • St. Francis (Ill.) played a very aggressive offensive attack on Sunday evening having 17 shot attempts with six on goal compared to the Cougars nine total shots.
  • Flores took a season-high five shots
  • Gonzalez scored her first goal of the season and collegiate career on Sunday.  All three of her shot attempts came on goal
  • Sunday's match was the ninth meeting between the two schools as they previously met in 2023 with the match ending in a 0-0 stalemate. Even with the loss, the Saints remain on top of the all-time series against the Cougars, leading 5-3-1
