CROWN POINT, Ind. --- The University of St. Francis softball season came to an end in the championship round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday afternoon after the No. 2-seeded Fighting Saints dropped a 4-1 decision to top-seeded Saint Xavier University at Legacy Fields.
USF, which finished the campaign 29-14, had limited scoring opportunities on the day. They did get a runner as far as third base in three of the seven innings, but all three times came with two outs. A groundout in the first inning and a strikeout in the fourth ended each of those threats.
The Saints did make it a 2-1 game in the fifth inning when
Brittany Osborne scored on a wild pitch after singling earlier in the frame. SXU also got out of that jam with a groundout.
Saint Xavier (27-12) did its scoring in the odd innings with single runs in the third and fifth frames before adding a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning.
Osborne accounted for nearly half of USF's seven hits, going 3-for-4 with one run scored.Â
Isabella Landeros had two of the other four singles.
Notes: Landeros finished as the team's top hitter, batting .406 … Osborne claimed six of the other nine offensive statistical categories: runs (39), hits (61), doubles (16), slugging percentage (.596), on-base percentage (.439) and stolen bases (3) …
Kaylie Sippel drove in the most runs (35), while
Jaelynn Taylor authored the most home runs (7) and
Emily Boyle, the most triples (4) … In the circle,
Kiersten Manning swept all categories with her 17 wins, three saves, 20 complete games, seven shutouts, 1.89 earned run average and 182 strikeouts.
