Game Recap: Baseball |

Daly Wins Eighth Straight Decision In Split With Trinity Christian

JOLIET, Ill. --- Ryan Daly won his eighth game in a row on the mound with an 8-2 first-game victory, but the University of St. Francis baseball team as a whole could not match that number in the nightcap as Trinity Christian College snapped the Fighting Saints' win streak at seven with a 7-4 second-game decision in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Duly Health & Care Field on Friday afternoon.

Daly (8-1) allowed only four hits in his complete-game performance.  He also got plenty of offensive help with no less than five starters recording at least two hits.

USF (19-15, 17-5 CCAC) hurt itself in Game 2 with four errors, which led to three of the Trinity Christian runs being unearned.

Josh Kirnbauer led all bats on the day with his four hits, two in each game.

Game 1: USF 8, Trinity Christian 2
The Saints built a 5-1 lead after two innings courtesy of a four-run second inning, where they batted around.  Nate Maliska and Jake Klepacz both had three hits with Klepacz also driving in a pair of runs.  John McGuire drove in two runs, as well, while Drew Dant, Kirnbauer and Jake Merda each put up a pair of hits.

USF added three insurance runs in the sixth inning, two on a pair of RBI triples from McGuire and Maliska.

Daly went the distance for the fourth time this season, allowing only one earned run over his seven innings of work.  He struck out seven batters against the four hits and two walks.

Game 2: Trinity Christian 7, USF 4
Trinity Christian (22-20, 14-10) scored two runs apiece in three of the first four innings and the Saints could never catch up, getting only as close as 6-4 after six innings.
Christopher Nielsen (6-1) kept USF off-balance all afternoon long with eight strikeouts and six popups among his 27 outs recorded.

McGuire (2 hits) and Montgomery (three) went a combined 5-for-9 at the plate at the top of the order, but were only driven in one time.  Kirnbauer provided one RBI on one of his two hits.

Notes: McGuire matched Dant's team-high 14-game hitting streak with hits in each contest Friday.  During the streak, he is batting .500 (29-for-58) … Dant also has the team high for most games reaching base safely, having now done so in 21 consecutive contests.  McGuire is next in line at 18 games … USF tied a season high with four stolen bases in Game 1, including McGuire's steal of home plate … With his victory on Friday, Daly has matched his win count from his first three seasons combined, where he went 8-6 … Daly leads the conference in wins and strikeouts (69), while ranking second in earned run average at 3.14 … The two teams complete the four-game series on Saturday in Palos Heights with a 1 pm doubleheader.
