Saints Sweep Calumet St. Joseph Behind Manning, Boyle

WHITING, Ind. --- Kiersten Manning and Emily Boyle each allowed just one run in the circle and the University of St. Francis softball team swept a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from Calumet College of St. Joseph with 10-1 and 9-1 victories on Saturday afternoon.

The top of USF's order did the offensive damage with the Nos. 1-4 hitters combining to go 15-for-28 (.536) with 12 runs batted in on the afternoon.  Headlining that group was Brittany Osborne, Boyle and Kaylie Sippel, who each had four hits.  Osborne drove in six runs and Sippel, four.

St. Francis had eight hits in the opener and doubled that count in the nightcap for 24 total over the two contests.  Calumet St. Joseph, meanwhile, was limited to seven hits across the two games.

Game 1: USF 10, Calumet St. Joseph 1
The Saints (21-11, 7-3 CCAC) put up eight runs in the second inning with five coming after two outs.  Each of the first five batters reached base to begin the inning, starting with Jaelynn Taylor, who opened it with a single and concluded the scoring with a two-run home run.  Sippel had a two-run single just one batter earlier.  Kylie Cook and Rose Mwaro coaxed bases-loaded walks to begin the scoring.

Osborne had a two-run single in the fifth inning to invoke the eight-run rule.  She also had a sacrifice fly in the big second inning.

Taylor and Cook accounted for half of USF's eight hits with two each.

Manning (13-5) recorded nine of her 15 outs on strikeouts.  The only run she allowed came in the first inning.  She walked four and yielded three hits.

Game 2: USF 9, Calumet St. Joseph 1
Osborne, Boyle, Sippel and Isabella Landeros each went 3-for-5 in Game 2 with Osborne matching her first-game RBI count of three.  Landeros drove in another two runners, while Mwaro went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two extra-base hits (double, triple).

USF matched its run count to the inning number over each of the first three frames in building a comfortable 6-0 advantage.  Osborne had a double and single to drive in runs over those latter two innings.  She also had another RBI double in the seventh inning.

Besides the three hits and driving in one run, Boyle averaged one strikeout over the seven-inning contest to even her record at 2-2.  She permitted four hits and just one walk to the Crimson Wave (8-25, 1-7).

Notes: Landeros now boasts the longest hitting streak of the season by any Saint after extending it to 10 games on Saturday.  During that time, she is hitting .429 (15-for-35) with nine runs batted in.  She has also reached base safely in 13 consecutive games … With her fifth home run of the campaign, Taylor has taken over the team lead in that category … USF tied a team-high with its seven walks in Game 1.  Its 16 hits in the nightcap were the second-highest output of the season … The Saints are home against Indiana University South Bend on Monday for a 3:30 pm doubleheader.
