JOLIET, Ill. ---
Drew Dant,
Jake Klepacz and
Brayan Hidalgo all drove in multiple runs and the University of St. Francis baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Calumet College of St. Joseph with its 10-6 victory Sunday afternoon. The contest was the continuation of Friday's second game, which was halted in the top of the second inning by snow showers.
A pair of four-run innings sparked the win with Dant driving in half the runs with two-run singles in each frame. The first big inning came in USF's initial at-bat with three of the four runs coming after two outs, including Klepacz's RBI double.
Calumet St. Joseph (11-17, 4-6 CCAC) chipped away at the deficit and eventually got the game knotted at four-all with a single run in the top of the fifth inning. USF (8-12, 6-2) was quick to respond with
Nate Maliska opening the bottom of the inning with a double and eventually scoring on Hidalgo's sacrifice fly. Another sacrifice fly by
Max Montgomery in the sixth inning made it a 6-4 game.
After Calumet St. Joseph cut the deficit back to one at 6-5 in the top of the eighth inning, the Saints put the game to bed in the bottom half of the inning with run-producing hits from Klepacz and Dant and Hidalgo driving home another run.
Dant and Klepcz also authored multi-hit games with two hits each.
Alex Martinez led in that category with his perfect 3-for-3 game and two runs scored at the top of the order.
Luke Guenther threw two hitless innings in the middle of the contest to register his first win as a Saint. He struck out three batters, while walking one.
Notes: USF extended its winning streak to a season-high four games … The Saints set team season highs for walks (10) and stolen bases (four) in the contest … Dant recorded his eighth multi-hit and fifth multi-RBI games of the season, both of which lead the squad … Dant and Maliska also boast team-high seven-game hitting streaks … Klepacz has reached base in each of his last ten games … Calumet St. Joseph recorded a rare triple play against USF in the second inning of the contest ...
