GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. --- The University of St. Francis softball team and Cornerstone University (Mich.) split a pair of shutout decisions on Friday afternoon with the Fighting Saints gaining a 10-0 first-game victory before dropping a 2-0 contest in the nightcap.
Kiersten Manning (6-3) tossed her fourth shutout of the season in the opener and three Saints got the day off on the right foot with multi-RBI games.Â
Kaylie Sippel,
Emily Boyle and
Isabella Landeros all recorded three hits on the afternoon and had at least one hit in each end of the doubleheader.
Game 1: USF 10, Cornerstone 0
Manning helped herself out by driving in a pair of runs on two hits, including a solo home run to start a five-run fourth inning. Landeros capped the scoring in the inning with her own two-run home run six batters later. In between, Boyle drove in two more with a double. Four of USF's five runs in the inning scored after two batters were out.
Manning's other RBI came one inning later on a double. She was equally impressive in the circle, where she struck out ten batters against only one walk and four hits in the five-inning affair.
Sippel, Boyle, Landeros and Manning all posted two hits in the contest with the latter three driving in at least a pair of runs. Landeros topped the list with her three-RBI game.
Game 2: Cornerstone 2, USF 0
The Saints (10-8) were shutout for the first time on the year in Game 2 by McKenna Gilde (3-1), who allowed just four hits. USF only had one runner get as far as second base and that came with two outs in the fourth inning.
Cornerstone (9-9) did not fair much better off St. Francis starter
Jordan Closs, who held the Golden Eagles to just five hits. Two of those came in the fourth inning when they scored their two runs.
USF's hits came off the bats of Sippel, Boyle, Landeros and
Zoe Ditter.
Notes: Manning's ten strikeouts were her second-highest total of the season … Landeros' three runs batted in marked her first multi-RBI game of the year … For the first time this season,
Brittany Osborne did not reach base in either end of the twinbill, snapping her streak of 16 consecutive games doing so … Landeros now currently holds both the longest on-base (12 games) and hitting streaks (6 games) for the team … The two-home run game in the opener was the Saints' second of the season … USF is at Siena Heights University (Mich.) on Saturday for a noon Central time doubleheader.
