JOLIET, Ill. ---
Rahmel Davis produced the third-highest point total in University of St. Francis men's basketball history and the Fighting Saints rallied from 12 points down in the second half to score an 89-76 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Holy Cross College on Wednesday night at the Pat Sullivan Center.
Davis, whose previous high was 29 points, nearly hit that mark in the second half alone on Wednesday, where he amassed 27 of his career-high 41 points. The junior guard missed just one shot from the field after the break, going 10-for-11, including hitting a pair of three-pointers. For the game, he was 16-for-20 and 7-of-9 at the foul line.
The 41 points ties Davis for the third spot with both Walter Jones and Chris Miller, who set their scoring marks in January, 1983 and January, 2013, respectively. Jones also holds the top two spots of 44 and 43 points set in 1983 and 1982.
Overshadowed by the performance was
Te Jones, who tied his career high with 20 points, going 7-for-11 with three treys in five attempts. Jones combined with Davis for 40 of USF's 55-point second half. He had 13 points after the intermission.
Shir Moraidi added a team-high seven rebounds, six points and four assists.
Holy Cross (8-15, 3-12 CCAC) led for the first 29 minutes of the game before the Saints went on a 7-0 run led by Davis' five points to take their first lead of the night, 61-60, with 11:06 remaining. The lead changed hands four times over the next three-plus minutes before USF took control with 13 straight points to turn a 68-66 deficit into a 79-68 lead with 4:22 remaining. A pair of treys from Jones sparked the outburst. Holy Cross would never threaten the rest of the night.
The Saints (6-14, 5-10) were on fire in the second half, connecting on 20 of their 27 shots from the field (.741) with Davis and Jones combining to go 14-for-17 (.824). St. Francis also went 6-for-10 from three-point range and 9-of-12 at the foul line after halftime.
That eventually led to USF authoring its best shooting mark of the season both overall (.586, 34-of-58) and from three-point range (.500, 6-of-12) resulting in its season-high point total.Â
Holy Cross was no slouch, either, shooting .509 from the field (28-of-55) and 13-of-16 at the foul line (.813). The guests were led by Desmond Davie's 18 points and eight rebounds.
Notes: Davis' 16 field goals were the top mark by a Saint this season … USF also had a season-high 18 assists, while tying its season-low mark of just seven turnovers … The Saints host NAIA No. 14-ranked Roosevelt University on Saturday at 3 pm.
