Saints' Season Comes To An End In CCAC Tournament Opening Round

GARY, Ind. --- The University of St. Francis men's basketball team's late-season run came to an end on Wednesday night as No. 2 seed Indiana University Northwest snapped the Fighting Saints' season-high four-game winning streak with a 78-65 victory in first-round action of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

A pair of runs – one in each half – did head coach Ryan Marks' club in on this night.  After falling behind 4-2 at the start of the contest, Indiana Northwest (19-10) rang up 18 of the next 22 points to take a 20-8 lead.

USF (10-16) was able to nearly wipe out that deficit, getting as close as three points in the first half before making it a one-point game twice early in the second half at 36-35 and 39-38.  It was also just a five-point game in favor of the hosts at 51-46 with 11:34 remaining in the contest before the RedHawks went on a 17-4 run over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach.

Indiana Northwest, which was held to 40 percent shooting (10-of-25) in the opening half, caught fire after the break, converting at a 53.3 percent clip (16-of-30).  The RedHawks also made good on 20 of their 23 free-throw attempts (87 pct.).

USF, which tied a season-low with its seven turnovers, could not get its offensive game going, especially in the first half when it shot just 31.4 percent (11-of-35) – including 1-for-9 on three-pointers – in managing only 27 points.  For the contest, the Saints produced a 37.1 percent shooting mark (26-of-70) on the night.

Te Jones led USF with his 21 points.  Rahmel Davis was the only other Saint to net at least ten markers, finishing with 14.  Dakoda Joachim came off the bench to produce a career-high nine rebounds to go along with his eight points.

Indiana Northwest, which had all but eight of its points come from its starters, had four players net at least 13 points with Trace Williams topping the list with his 23 points.

Notes: Davis, who scored in double figures for the 13th straight game, finished the campaign as the Saints' leader in scoring (16.4 ppg), field goal percentage (.525) and rebounding (4.9 rpg) … Shir Moraidi tied Davis for the rebounding title … Jones, who ran his double-figure scoring streak to seven games in a row, finished as the top team performer in three-pointers (52) and three-point field goal accuracy (.419) … Joachim claimed USF's other top shooting mark with his .796 reading at the foul line.  He also tied Nadav Gerner for the most steals with 27 … Gerner's other title came via his 67 assists … Gerner and Jones were the only Saints to start all 26 games during the season.
