Saints Fall Twice To Indiana Southeast In Poll Battle

NEW ALBANY, Ind. --- In a battle between two teams among others receiving votes in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll, Indiana University Southeast came away with 5-4 and 10-2 victories over the University of St. Francis softball team Sunday afternoon with the former affair going eight innings.

The Grenadiers (3-4) rallied twice to win Game 1 before jumping out to an 8-0 lead after three innings in the nightcap.

The Fighting Saints (1-3) coaxed ten walks and had nine hits on the day, but went just 2-for-21 with runners in scoring position between the two games.  Emily Boyle (three hits) and Isabella Landeros (two) combined for five of the hits and authored at least one in each end of the twinbill.

Game 1: Indiana Southeast 5, USF 4 --- 8 Innings
St. Francis broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a pair of runs coming home on a double by Boyle and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jaelynn Taylor.  Two innings later, Indiana Southeast gained both of those runs back as well as one more when it opened the fifth inning by having five of the first six batters reach base.

USF put its own rally caps on one-half inning later when Boyle and Landeros came through in the clutch with two-out RBI singles to regain a 4-3 edge.  The guests gave one of those runs back, however, on an error in the bottom half of the inning, which eventually forced extra innings.

The Saints had their chances to regain the lead yet again in both the seventh and eighth innings, having a runner on third base with one out in the former inning and no outs in the latter.  Maci Warner (3-0) came on in relief to thwart both rallies, recording four of the final five outs on strikeouts.  She would go on to win both games, striking out nine batters on the day and allowing only one earned run over her eight innings of work.

Each of IUSE's final two runs came across on errors, including the winning run on an errant throw.

Boyle finished the game accounting for all of her team's runs, scoring twice and driving in the other two on a pair of hits.

Game 2: Indiana Southeast 10, USF 2
In the nightcap, Indiana Southeast scored five times in the second inning and three more one frame later.  USF could only counter with one run in the third inning and the other one in the sixth inning.  Gracyn Gabriel was credited with the lone RBI on her bases-loaded walk in the third inning.

After going down in order in each of the first two innings, the Saints left ten runners on base over the final four innings, including the bases loaded in both the third and sixth innings.

Autumn Oehlstrom went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead Indiana Southeast's offensive attack.

Boyle, Landeros and Kiersten Manning had the only hits for USF.

Notes: Landeros has hit safely in each of her first four games to start the season … With her hits in both ends of the doubleheader Sunday, Boyle has also hit safely in each of the three games that she has recorded an at-bat … USF's six walks registered in Game 2 were a season high … The Saints head to Kentucky on Monday to take on Brescia University for a 1 pm doubleheader.
