HENDERSON, Tenn. ---
Josh Kirnbauer,
Jake Klepacz and
Nate Maliska all produced multi-hit games for the University of St. Francis baseball team, but NAIA No. 25-ranked Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.) scored in seven of eight innings to claim a weekend sweep of the Fighting Saints capped off by its 10-5 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Kirnbauer went 3-for-4 on the day and started a four-run seventh-inning rally with his solo home run. Maliska and
Cliff Vickers also had run-scoring doubles in the inning with the latter's hit driving in a pair of runs.
USF's other run came in the second inning when
Dan Gusel drove in Klepacz (single) and reached on a fielding error to knot the score at one-all. Freed-Hardeman (14-1) tallied the next six runs, including four in the fifth inning, to gain a 7-1 advantage before the Saints (1-4) got the deficit back down to 8-5 in the seventh inning.
Maliska and Klepacz each registered two hits in the contest for the Saints, who had seven of their ten hits in the two innings in which they produced runs.
Jordan Carter went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead the Lions in both categories.
Notes: USF's ten hits on the day were a season high … Kirnbauer's home run was the fourth one of his career …
Drew Dant's single in the third inning enabled him to hit safely in each of the four games during the weekend series … Maliska recorded his second two-hit game in as many days … The Saints are back in action next Saturday against both University of Northwestern Ohio (9 am) and NAIA No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett College (1 pm) to begin their seven-game swing through Georgia.
