UPLAND, Ind. --- A solid performance by University of St. Francis'
Sam Tumilty has earned the senior quarterback Mid-States Football Association Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week honors for the third time this season, it was announced by the league office late Monday. He has now gained the distinction seven times in his career.
Tumilty threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two more as the Saints rallied from a 22-0 deficit to score a 36-29 overtime upset victory over NAIA No. 18-ranked Saint Xavier University on Saturday. That effort showcased a 21-for-30 completion performance that went for 242 yards in the road win.
Tumilty had come into the contest with a combined eight rushing touchdowns through the team's first five games. His two scoring runs on Saturday were part of a 14-carry, 59-yard rushing afternoon for him. Altogether, he accounted for 301 of USF's 387 total yards of offense.
For the season, Tumilty ranks 21st in the nation in passing offense with his 232.7 yards-per-game average. Through the team's first six games, he has totaled 472 rushing yards on 79 carries with 10 touchdowns. In the air, he has thrown for 1,396 yards with 11 touchdowns.
Saturday's win was the fifth one in six contests for USF this season and moved the Saints back into hte NAIA Coaches' Poll at the No. 23 spot.
