JOLIET, Ill. --- A career-high scoring night from
Tykara Harrison and a season-best 13 treys from the University of St. Francis women's basketball team were not enough to derail unbeaten and NAIA No. 19-ranked Indiana University South Bend at the Sullivan Center Wednesday night as the Titans came away with an 83-66 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory.
Harrison would finish with 27 points, tying the team season high in field goals with 11 in 17 attempts. Five of those makes came from long range in 10 tries, while she also dished out five assists.
Laurelei Thormeyer was equally impressive from long distance, tying her season-high mark of six treys in 14 attempts en route to her second-highest scoring effort of the campaign with her 19 points. She also provided a pair of steals.
Keijah Gray, meanwhile, recorded her first double-double as a Saint, finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals.Â
Indiana South Bend (21-0, 13-0 CCAC) countered with all five of its starters recording at least nine points, topped by Maddie Gard's 21-point, 10-rebound performance. Tenleigh Phelps also hit for 20 points to go along with six boards and four assists.
The only quarter in which the Titans did not shoot better than 50 percent was the first when the Fighting Saints (8-13, 4-9) came out of the see-saw frame with a 17-15 advantage. IUSB would shoot 50 percent in both the second and third quarters before finishing up with an 11-for-14 mark (.786) in the fourth quarter to end the night at .541 overall (33-of-61). USF wound up at .410 (25-of-61).
Fifteen lead changes and three ties made up the first 16 minutes of the game before the guests used an 8-0 push to eventually take a 36-32 lead at the break. Indiana South Bend continued its momentum into the third quarter, opening on a 14-1 run to go up 50-33 with just under three minutes gone in the period.
The Saints were able to get the deficit back to single digits three times in the fourth quarter with a 10-1 surge late in the third quarter that bled over into the fourth. The closest USF would get would be 62-54 with 8:19 remaining.
Notes: The Saints also made 13 treys the first time the two teams met back on Dec.9 and in the season opener against Cleary University (Mich.) on Oct. 27 … Harrison's scoring splurge marked her third time connecting for at least 20 points and her 14th straight game scoring in double figures … Gray has a streak of three games in a row pulling down exactly 10 rebounds … Thormeyer's six treys tied a career mark for her as well as a team high for the season … The Saints are on the road to face Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday for a 1 pm conference contest.
