JOLIET, Ill. --- St. Ambrose University ruined a career-high afternoon for
Rahmel Davis by hitting 12 three-pointers, including getting its last six field goals from long range, to defeat the University of St. Francis men's basketball team 75-71 in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at the Sullivan Center on Saturday.
The Fighting Bees finished the day converting at a .480 clip from three-point range (12-of-25) – compared with just 40 percent overall (22-of-55) – in winning for the third straight game. They led just 45-42 with 8:43 remaining in the contest before their spree of six treys in nine attempts resulted in a 64-55 advantage with just under two minutes to play. The guests then sealed the victory with their final 11 points coming in 12 free throw attempts.
For the half, St. Ambrose was 7-for-13 from long distance, which accounted for seven of its final nine field goals. The Saints, on the opposite end, were just 1-for-7 from three-point range after the break and 3-for-15 for the day.
Those numbers overshadowed another big day for Davis, who hit for 20-plus points for the third time in four contests, finishing with 29 on the afternoon, 19 of which came in the second half. He went 10-for-16 from the field and a near-perfect 9-for-10 at the foul line, while also tying for the team lead in rebounds with seven.
Te Jones was the only other Saint to score in double figures, producing ten points and six rebounds.Â
Shir Moraidi matched Davis' seven rebounds, while also leading USF (4-11, 3-7 CCAC) with five assists.Â
St. Ambrose used a balanced attack to improve to 10-8 overall and 7-3 in the league with six players ranging between eight and 16 points. Collin Wainscott topped the list with 16 markers, 14 of which came in the second half, where he did not miss a shot, going 2-for-2 on three-point attempts and 8-for-8 at the foul line. Guillermo Narbona led all rebounders (11 boards), while dishing out a game-high seven assists.
USF's biggest lead of the afternoon came in the opening half when it jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the first ten minutes. St. Ambrose was able to whittle that deficit down to 29-28 at the break.
The Saints' largest lead of the second half was four points (36-32) courtesy of a string of seven unanswered points early on. St. Ambrose gained its biggest lead after the break at 61-51 during the three-point barrage, including one stretch where they scored 10 of 12 points to go up 51-42.
Notes: The 12 treys were the most by a St. Francis opponent this year … The Saints turned 17 St. Ambrose turnovers into 17 points, while tying a team low turning the ball over themselves with seven miscues leading to just five Bee points … USF's 24 free throws made and 28 attempts were both season highs, while its .857 shooting percentage was the second-best mark of the year … Davis tied the team season high of ten made field goals, which he initially set ten days earlier in a 27-point performance versus Governors State University (Jan. 10) … USF's .200 shooting mark from three-point range tied a season-low percentage … St. Francis' last three losses have been by a combined 13 points … The Saints are on the road for a pair of league games next week starting Wednesday against Trinity Christian College at 7:30 pm.
