Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Roosevelt Uses Late Run To Defeat Saints 68-61

CHICAGO --- Four of five University of St. Francis women's basketball starters scored in double figures, but Roosevelt University put together a late 14-2 run to gain a 68-61 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory on Sunday afternoon at the Goodman Center.

Jorja Bolton and Tykara Harrison each totaled 14 points to lead the way for the Fighting Saints (7-9, 3-5 CCAC).  Harrison also had a game-high six assists.

Other contributors included Laurelei Thormeyer with 11 points and Baylei Johnson with ten points and nine rebounds.

Roosevelt (7-9, 5-3) was led by Jayla Turchin's 22 points.

USF actually outshot Roosevelt in all three areas with a .463 mark from all field goal attempts (25-of-54), a .350 reading from three-point range (7-of-20) and .800 accuracy at the foul line (4-of-5).  The Lakers were .426 (26-of-61), .217 (5-of-23) and .786 (11-of-14).  The Saints, however, were hurt by 23 turnovers.

The contest was tight throughout with 15 lead changes, nine ties and no team leading by more than eight points.  That came late to close out Roosevelt's big finish.

The hosts built a 16-9 lead in the opening quarter only to have the Saints tie the game with the next seven points.  In the middle two quarters, the lead was never higher than four points for either club.  A Keijah Gray layup with 1:40 remaining in the third quarter sent USF into the fourth quarter leading 47-46.

Back-to-back baskets by Johnson midway through the fourth quarter provided St. Francis with its biggest lead of the game (56-52) at the 5:39 mark. Roosevelt, however, hit five of seven shots from the field down the stretch as part of the 14-2 run to gain the biggest lead for either team on the night at 66-58 with just 19 seconds remaining.

Notes: Bolton tied a season high with her 14 points … Harrison, who authored her ninth double-figure scoring game in a row, recorded a season-high six assists … Johnson fell one rebound short of collecting ten boards in three straight games and producing her third double-double of the season … The Saints are back in Chicago on Wednesday to take on Saint Xavier University in a 5 pm CCAC matchup.
