JOLIET, Ill. --- The University of St. Francis softball team made it a perfect dozen with its doubleheader sweep of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Indiana University South Bend on Tuesday at the Harlow Lockwood Softball Fields. With their 8-0 and 12-1 victories, the Fighting Saints (29-7, 16-2 CCAC) have extended their season-high winning streak to 12 games.
Brittany Osborne and
Danielle Callahan provided the fireworks on offense. Osborne homered as part of a 5-for-7, 5-RBI day for her, while Callahan totaled three hits, including a pair of two-run home runs.
Hannah Vachon,
Madisen Tucker and
Bridget McDermott combined to allow just six hits over the pair of shortened five-inning contests, while not giving up an earned run.
Game 1: USF 8, Indiana South Bend 0
Osborne's pair of two-run doubles led to big second and fifth innings. The first hit gave the Saints a 3-0 lead, while the latter forced the eight-run rule as part of a four-run frame.
Tucker accounted for USF's other run batted in on a sacrifice fly.
Vachon (14-2) needed only one of those runs in tossing her sixth shutout of the season. She allowed just two hits in her five innings of work, while striking out eight batters against one walk.
Game 2: USF 12, Indiana South Bend 1
The Saints continued where they left off in Game 1, scoring 12 more times with no less than two runs in any of their four at-bats. Callahan got things started with her two-run home run in the second inning before launching another one in the third inning as part of a four-RBI game for her.
Five starters in all had multi-hit games as part of a 14-hit attack. Osborne and
Rose Mwaro each totaled three hits to lead the pack, while driving in one run each. Osborne's came on her fourth home run of the season. Her other hit also went for extra bases (double).
Callahan was joined by McDermott and
Zoe Ditter with two hits apiece. Ditter's hits were an RBI triple and a two-run double.
Isabella Landeros also had a pinch-hit two-run double.
Tucker (9-1) went the first four innings in the circle before giving way to McDermott in the fifth inning. They combined to allow just four hits, while the only run allowed was unearned.
Notes: The two wins allowed the Saints to maintain their lock on first place in the conference standings with two league affairs remaining. They hold a half-game advantage over Saint Xavier and a one-game lead over Olivet Nazarene, who they host on Thursday at 3:30 pm in their regular-season home finale … Prior to the start of the game, the program honored its eight seniors:
Mollie Beckman, Callahan,
Maddy Eckberg,
Kenna Kleinert,
Maddie Massaro, McDermott, Tucker and Vachon … The contest marked the fifth straight game in which St. Francis has totaled at least eight runs … In the circle, USF pitchers have allowed two or fewer runs in 20 of their last 22 games … Osborne extended a pair of season-high streaks on the day. Her hitting streak is now at ten games, while her streak of reaching base is up to 13 straight contests … Callahan and Osborne both had their second four-RBI games of the year.
