JOLIET, Ill. --- The top of the University of St. Francis baseball team's order got it done on Thursday afternoon at Duly Health ad Care Field, going a combined 7-for-11 and driving in all six runs in the Fighting Saints' 6-5 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Roosevelt University.
John McGuire's two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a four-all tie and proved to be just enough in the end after Roosevelt (16-8, 5-3 CCAC) made it a one-run game in the ninth inning with the tying run on first base.
Both teams scored a pair of runs in their first at bats with USF's coming on an
Eric Maffie two-run double. Roosevelt then regained its two-run advantage with single runs in the third and fourth innings.
One inning later, the Saints (9-21, 4-5) forced the game's second tie when
Alex Martinez made the Lakers pay for a leadoff error with his two-run home run to leftfield.
Martinez at the top of the order, along with McGuire in the three hole and Maffie in the cleanup spot, all turned in two hits, while
Josh Kirnbauer went 1-for-3 batting second.
Starting pitcher
Mack Malczewski struck out eight batters in his six innings of work before giving way to the bullpen.Â
Sean Michalak (2-1) gained the win by going the next 2 2/3 innings before
Quinn McGuire wrapped up the victory with his first save of the season.
Notes: Quinn McGuire's save was also the first of his collegiate career … Batting in the leadoff spot each of the last two games, Martinez has gone 4-for-5 … USF's two runs in both the first and seventh innings were set up by sacrifices from
John McGuire and Kirnbauer … The three-game series, which was scheduled to continue on Saturday, has been pushed back to Sunday due to forecasted unfavorable conditions on Saturday. The doubleheader begins at noon at Ozinga Field in Crestwood.
