TUCSON, Ariz. ---
Hannah Vachon posted her first complete-game shutout of the season in a 6-0 victory over Siena Heights University (Mich.) for the University of St. Francis softball team, but the Saints could not ride that momentum in the nightcap, leaving 13 runners on base in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of York University (Neb.) on Friday afternoon at the Tucson Invitational Games.
Kaylie Sippel (5-for-7, 2 RBIs) and
Maddie Massaro (4-for-7, 2 RBIs) were the big hitters on the day, producing multiple hits in each end of the doubleheader as well as driving in one run in each contest.Â
Brittany Osborne,
Danielle Callahan and
Rose Mwaro also supplied hits in both games.
The shutout was the second one of the season for the Saints (9-5) with Vachon starting both contests. She went the first four innings in a season-opening 8-0 victory against Brescia University (Ky.) back on Feb. 25.Â
Friday's win was Vachon's team-leading fourth of the season.
Game 1: USF 6, Siena Heights 0
The Saints scored in four of six innings, pulling away late with a three-run sixth inning when Osborne drove in one run and Callahan two with singles.Â
Massaro and Sippel had their RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. Sippel, who went 3-for-3 in the game, also scored on an error in the fourth inning.
Massaro and Mwaro both went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Vachon (4-1) scattered five hits over seven innings in her first complete-game effort of the season. She struck out three batters, while yielding one walk.
The loss left Siena Heights at 3-12 on the season.
Game 2: York 3, USF 2
The Saints had their chances to score more than their two runs with a game-high 11 hits and five walks, but left 13 runners on base for the contest, including multiple runners in five of the seven innings.
USF finally broke through in the top of the seventh inning with RBI hits from Sippel (double) and Massaro (single) to knot the score at two-all. York (8-8), however, opened the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back singles followed by a wild pitch and a fielder's choice to win the contest.
St. Francis, which left the bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings, gained two hits each from Osborne, Callahan, Sippel and Massaro.
Notes: Madisen Tucker has reached base safely in seven straight games after coaxing three walks on Friday … Callahan's two runs batted in in the first game marked her team-leading fifth multi-RBI game of the year … Mwaro extended her hitting streak to a season-high five games with hits in both contests. Her two hits in the first game resulted in her first multi-hit game as a Saint … USF wraps up its Arizona trip on Saturday facing Dickinson State University (ND) and Valley City State University (ND).
