BATESVILLE, Ark. ---
Eric Maffie homered for the third game in a row,
Luke Ketchum did so for the second straight contest and the first six hitters in the University of St. Francis baseball team's lineup all produced multiple hits in the Fighting Saints' 7-2 victory over Lyon College (Ark.) on Sunday.
The win allowed USF (5-3) to take three of four games in the series and head home riding a three-game winning streak.
Maffie led the second straight 16-hit attack for the Saints by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in. The two RBIs came in similar fashion to the start of Saturday's second game, where he opened the scoring with a three-run first-inning home run in that contest. On Sunday, it was a two-run poke in the initial frame.
After Lyon cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning,
Jake Vera regained the two-run cushion for the Saints with the first of his two doubles on the afternoon. He drove in
Josh Kirnbauer, who doubled two batters earlier.
The host Scots (1-6) matched that run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 3-2 game before the Saints batted around and scored four times in the seventh inning. Ketchum (2-for-4, 2 runs) had the big blow with his two-run home run.
John McGuire (single) and
Brayan Hidalgo (sacrifice fly) drove in the other two runs in the inning.
McGuire, Hidalgo and
Jake LaSota all joined Vera and Ketchum with a pair of hits each.
Four USF pitchers combined to allow just one earned run with
Jacob Jurka (1-0) gaining his first collegiate victory.
Jacob Blim went the first four innings, allowing just one unearned run. He was followed by Jurka, who struck out five batters against only one walk over the next three innings.
Kevin Kardas and
Ethan Fleming closed things out with Kardas going 1 1/3 innings and Fleming getting the final two outs.
Notes: Maffie went 8-for-11 with four walks, seven extra-base hits (3 home runs, 4 doubles) and nine runs batted in over the final three games of the series … The Saints have produced 10-plus hits in five of their first eight games leading to a .307 team batting average for the season … USF opens its home season on Tuesday when it faces neighboring rival Lewis University at 3 pm at Duly Health and Care Field.
