McGuire Pitches Well In 3-1 Loss

BATESVILLE, Ark. --- The University of St. Francis baseball team was held to one hit by Lyon College left-hander Ayden Heitmann, who went the distance in the Scots' 3-1 home-opening victory on Friday afternoon.  Gio Pappas ruined Heitmann's no-hit bid with a two-out single in the eighth inning.

The Saints (2-3) had only three runners get as far as second base in the nine-inning affair.  Starting pitcher John McGuire (1-1) would be the only one to come around and score
on the day.  He did so in the fifth inning after reaching on an error and going to second on the play.

Josh Kirnbauer sacrificed McGuire to third, who then scored on Alex Martinez's sacrifice fly.  That made it a 2-1 game.

Lyon (1-3) collected its first run in the opening inning on a triple and single.  The Scots added their second run – an unearned one – one-half inning before the Saints to go up 2-0.  Hayden Hargrave provided an insurance run in the seventh inning with his solo home run to account for the game's final run.

Heitmann (1-1) finished his afternoon with four strikeouts against one walk and the one hit.  His lone run allowed was unearned.

McGuire had his second solid outing for the Saints.  In his five innings of work, he permitted just one earned run and five hits, while striking out four batters and not walking anyone.

Sean Michalak finished out the game with just one hit allowed and striking out three in his three innings.

Notes: The Saints and Lyon meet again on Saturday for a noon doubleheader.
